relative pronoun



Relative Pronoun

Relative pronoun is a conjunction to relate the noun in a main clause (called main noun) and sub clause.
The noun + relative pronoun
 


Example:
-          Is she midwife who is suspected of doing a mal practical to pregnant women?
noun      RP                    adjective clause
adjective clause has function to modify, describe, and identify the noun.
The noun + adjective clause
                                                              
Example:
-          She was watering flowers when I passed infront of her house
-          What she did last night was very embarrassing
-          The problem she is trying to solve is very complicated
-          She remembers the time when she was given a scholarship
-          The father who works for his family is strong
-          She says to me that she is falling in love
-          The beautiful girl that falls in love with my brother has a good behaviour
Relative pronoun are divided by 4 parts, they are relative pronoun for subject ( who, which, that), object( whom, which, that, who), possessive (whose), and adverb (where, when, why). I will explain it one by one.
1.      Using subject pronoun
Relative pronoun for subject is divided by two kinds. They are for person and non person. For person, we can use who and that. And for non person, we can use which and that. If the noun is a countable noun, we don’t need to put article “the” before it. But, if noun modified by the clause we need to put article “the” before noun. For example:
-          Where are the people who don’t get a financial assistance from the government going on strike?
-          Was the farmer who was bitten by a venomous spider when working in the farm brought to a hospital for an emergency treatment?
-          You still remember the band vocalist who was imprisoned for being an actor of pornographic videos, don’t you?
-          Do the plants which are often used for medical purpose only grow on a highland?
-          The police can hardly solve the scandal  which involves some members of parliament
-          Have the elephants which often attack villages and destroy agricultures farms lost their natural habits?

2.      Object pronoun
In this object pronoun, don’t use name in subject. Example:
-           someone whom we have ever helped.
-          Dini visited museum which the government keeps well
-          The old man whom mary met in the cafe last night looks frightened
3.      Object of preposition
There are some objects must use preposition, because the object is followed directly. As look at, look for, look after, depend on, smile at, listen to, believe in, tell to, wait for, and etc. Example:
-           music about which everybody talks is very modern or music which everybody talks is very modern.
-          Mirza brings many dictionaries which everybody talks about
-          Suci whom my friend is very proud of does everything for her family
-          The song which Nindy listens to is very loud
4.      Using whose
Whose is used to replace possessive adjective of the main noun. Whose + noun is relative pronoun that is only followed by the noun. Example:
-          The car whose machine doesn’t work is being dragged to that garage
-          Is the doctor whose patient is died after being injected confused?
-          Can the eagle whose wings are wounded fly well again?
-          The plants whose leaves for medication grow well
-          Who is repairing the bike, the pedals of which are broken?
-          Has Kuni made the soup, the taste of which everybody likes?
-          Yana won’t buy the shoes, the string of which are lost
-          The dolls, the color of which she likes, are on the bed
-          Maya rents a new car, the wheels of which look luxurious
5.      Using comma
a.       Noun of which, for example: Icha buy some books, the covers of which are blue.
b.      Expression of number, example: my uncle, both of whose children were lost, looks confused.
c.       Noun has been identified by name, possessive adjective, expression of quantity, and demonstrative words. Example:
-           your aunt, who was looking for you in your boarding house, visited my old brother.
-          Marine sends my younger brother a glass of milk, which he asked yesterday
-          Those are the shoes which Lala wants to buy
-          Those bags, which Sinta wants to buy, are luxurious
6.      Expressions of quantity/ number
Expressions of quantity such as one of, two of, both of, some of, most of, none of, all of, few of, and etc. Relative pronoun which is used in expressions of quantity are whom (person), whose (possessive), and which (thing). Example:
-          Oldwoman, two of whose children get accident feels sad
-          The examinees, some of whom are still very young are doing the test seriously, aren’t they?
-          The car, one of whose wheels off suddenly crashed some trees
-          The blue cars, three of which are very luxurious and expensive displayed in the showroom
-          Are the houses, some of which were broken by earthquake 2 days ago being renovated?
-          Will Citra use the flowers, some of which she took from her own garden to decorate her room?
-          Who is riding the motorbike, neither of whose breaks work properly?

7.      Using when and where

Example:
-          Do you still remember the place where I met Shaheer Khan?
-          Do you still remember the place which I met Shaheer Khan in?

-          Do you still remember the place I met Shaheer Khan?

Example:
-          Did you forget the day when he left you?
-          Did you forget the day on which he left you?
-          Did you forget the day that he left you?
